| | | Still plenty to find To say it’s supposed to be quietening down, now that winter has arrived, there is still plenty to find if you don’t mind the cold weather,
This little lot were seen during a hours long walk with the dogs today, in Clumber Park,
Some were obviously frozen solid (so was I) and will probably turn to mush as they thaw out, the frost did not seem to penetrate under the pines as much, so there were still a few fungi to be found there,
Fomes fomentarius
Scleroderma citrinum
Auricularia auricula
Chondostereum purpureum
Polyporus brumalis
Heterobasidion annosum
Piptoporus betulinus
Trametes versicolor
Stereum hirsutum
Flammulina velutipes
Collybia butyracea
Collybia peronata
Mycena galericulata
Ganoderma applantum
Hygrophorus hypothejus
Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca
Pleurotus ostreatus
Stropharia aurantiaca
Xlaria hypoxylon
Laetiporus sulphurous (old)
Daldinia concentrica
and even a couple of Phallus impudicus
Plus several as yet unidentified ones!!
and thats not including JPs pick up a stick type of fungi |

John | would that be the cycle track or the one from the oak tree before the gates??

next bumper year.
FJ is the stig of fungi (some say he is mycorrhizal)

Cheers J.P. | The whole house roared with laughter after reading this JP
The thing about Clumber or anywhere else is to study the habitats.
Mycorrhizal is the key word here.
Ground work is so important too! One of the first things I had to do was to learn more about trees. I still find it very frustrating when I come across a tree or stump and have no idea what they are
I've now spent 4 years and almost every weekend at Clumber and I've only covered about one third but I do have a good idea on where to find certain species any time of the year. Any new finds are just a bonus!
I'm sure 2009 will be a good year ... even if it means looking a little harder in places
FJ Stig of fungi .... I like that

Brian | The one before the gates Brian. Look out for the masses of orange peel fungus within the border fields (entrance through gate or style).

John | Hi John ,thanks for that, i get down there quite often, but must confess i have not noticed the orange peel yet,
there have been some interesting finds in the areas to the left of the path, where the conifers have been removed and replanted, quite a few Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca growing among the stumps left there even in the frosty conditions we've had lately,
