| | | Grassland fungi ID please Another one for ID please folks.
My initial response was young Field Blewit, but there was no purple on it and the spore print was a peachy/tope colour - bit like the stuff you find in a lady's compact.
Cheers,

I think your first thoughts were correct. The Field Blewit has a spore print that is described as cream-yellow with an orange tint. The only part of the fruit-body that shows any sign of purple is the stipe which you don't show
The cap should be ochre-grey to gray-beige when young with the gills notched with 1-7 lamellula all of which fit your find.

| | | Re: Grassland fungi ID please Sorry about the stipe but they were all very short and was unable to extract ne intact. None showed any purple tinge though. Thanks for confirming my thoughts though.

Sorry about that They are the lamella (gills) that do not reach the stipe. Some fungi have every gill going from the cap edge to the stipe but others have 1/3/5/7 in between the full sized ones that are shorter. These are the lamellula and can help in some cases in identifying a find.

Mal | you're gonna kill me
one lamella . . . . two lamellae
one lamellula . . . . two lamellulae
the ulus (i) - ulum (a) - ula (ae) ending is a latin diminutive (meaning little) like the Anglo-Saxon "-ling" ending
eg:
darling . . . little dear one
duckling . . . little duck
sanderling . . . little sand (shore) bird
sapling . . . nestling . . . yearling . . . gosling etc
Chris
PS a lot of mycological works will give the range of the number of gills - as Mal says - plus the number of these 'mini-gills' . . . it all goes towards trying to put a name to a fungus

I can't even blame "finger trouble" or my usual lousy spelling just lack of Latin skills but it's the though that count isn't it?
