"gross morphology in fungi can be taxonomically misleading"
What are you saying Chris?
"sequencing and other molecular studies are starting to unravel a lot of the picture; the days when you could just look at any fungus on the macro level and be able to place it taxonomically are gone"
Oh sh**!

The asexual stage of Nectria inventa, on Daldinia concentrica: Apparently the sexual stage is seldom found.

| | | Re: Pick up sticks Does anyone recognise this.
Found yesterday on the lower part of the stem of Heracleum. Nothing useful found with microscopy as yet.
From Ellis & Ellis, Phoma complanata ( Metasphaeria complanata) is possible but they don't illustrate it and nothing showing on the web (that I have found).
Thanks,
Chris |

Thanks,
Chris | hi Chris
a couple of things: - I suspect those are not Heracleum stems; I think that is Angelica sylvestris
- the fungus is Heterosphaeria patella, which does occasionally occur on other members of the Apiaceae, but I have only ever seen it on Angelica on which it is actually very common
cheers
Chris
PS - let's hope Andreas doesn't kick off about the typification of Pyrenopeziza if he sees this

Chris | Thanks Chris - that looks spot-on. I hadn't considered Angelica as the area is quite exposed and rough and I hadn't recalled seeing Angelica there. Quote:

Though I would add one before the thread gets lost:
Pleospora herbarium on dead stem of Euphorbia lathyris (Derby)

| | | Re: Pick up sticks While I was trying to get a decent photo of this Comatricha nigra which is never easy
I spotted the tops of these pear shaped fruitbodies embedded in the rotting wood
What I at first took as spores (possibly immature) are long and septate with a swollen section
and I then found asci with spores still intact some of which looked similar
but others which look nothing like.
Can anyone sort out my confusion.
Thanks

Mal | You said it Mal
these asci are immature - if you still have the material keep it damp and it may mature - I suspect those spores will colour up as time goes on

| | | Re: Pick up sticks Does Gnomonia setacea grow on betula wood as well as leaves?
The distinctive spores make it look right but leaves are the only substrate I can find mentioned
Thanks
