| | | Fungi on Miscellaneous substrates Hello all
Following on from our recent excellent threads on Cordyceps and in addition to our famous ‘Herbivore dung - Have a dung day!’ (Much due to JP for his excellent contributions) I would like to suggest a thread based on miscellaneous substrates.
I think it would help to keep such information in one place … Our own practical ‘Ellis and Ellis’ type thread!
If there's sufficient interest I'll make it a sticky. What do you think?

| | | Re: Fungi on Miscellaneous substrates If i had to suggest a thread title for the next few months while we await
spring (putting aside dung culture ) i would suggest "Pick up sticks".
There are all manner of fungi on fallen limbs, some grew on the sticks in the
air and are only seen when they fall to the ground, many survive as the
sticks are sheltered in the leaf litter from temperature extremes.
I would encourage the purchase of a cheap magnifying glass from the pound
shop, i use mine far more than my hand lense, you will be amazed how these
are enough to reveal tiny cup fungi.
Many finds we may not be able to identify but i feel that is a big part of
learning and progress has been made this year, do roll over logs, admire,
photograph and/or take samples then put the sticks back in position found,
there is no need to lug a mass of limbs home (unless you wish to have a wood
pile to monitor).
Cheers J.P. |

| | | Re: Fungi on Miscellaneous substrates As JP says sticks are a good start. I have also found lots of various fungi on acorns and fir cones this year, so we have a bit of scope to start with to wile away the winter hours . |

| | | Re: Fungi on Miscellaneous substrates another thread possibility is "fungi on fungi",
i'm sure JP could soon make a few additions to it ,
heres one i discovered this morning, growing on my Stropharia aurantiaca & woodchips i had been trying to "grow on", i inadvertantly left the lid on for a couple of days with this as an end result, no idea what it is , but interesting all the same

Cheers J.P. | Excellent idea!! both the "pick up sticks" and the magnifying glass, i'm forever seeing things on logs and branches that i know i'll never be able to identify in a million years, the idea that there are even more fungi on the log than can be seen with the naked eye is even more interesting!,
you've got my vote for the new thread title.
