| | | Sharing some fungi pics....ID would be nice. Hi guys,
This is my first post on WAB! & hopefully not my last!
I took these pictures in woods around Canterbury in Kent, I hope you enjoy them. Any suggestions on ID would be nice as i'm just getting started on fungi.
Not being experienced in fungi ID any suggestions for taking better photos for ID'ing would be appreciated.

First off, lovely images Now for ID's!
1. Mycena epipterygia- the faint lemon yellow at the top of the stem is a significant characteristic of this species.
2. I think is a Clitocybe sp. but impossible to say which. Slight possibility of it being Laccaria laccata- I have seen them this shape.
3. Armillaria sp, probably A. mellea- commonly known as Honey Fungus. A gardeners/arboriculturists worst enemy.
4. Pretty confident that this is Coprinellus disseminatus.
Lovely images, hope that helps!

Welcome to the Fungi forum.
As a basic rule for photographing for identification purposes rather than for a good asthetic photo you need to show the overall fruit body as you have done but then show the gills - this gives the number colour and attachment to the stalk and whether it has a ring left over from the partial veil.
Your photos are I think
1 Mycena possibly filopes but it has the slight red tinge that would be make metata more likely (although that grows with conifers and no evidence in the picture)
2 Clitocybe sp
3 Honey fungus
4 Coprinus disseminatus

| | | Re: Sharing some fungi pics....ID would be nice. See I've always assumed (now I know, wrongly) that the delicate Mycena with the gentle yellow stipe are M. epipterygia What are the differences between my suggestion and your two, just out of curiosity? |

You can peel the cap and the edge of the gill pulls away as an elastic thread on epipterygia
Unfortunately looking again you might be right on this one Nick The cap doesn't look as sticky as it should and I would normally expect it to show some signs of yellow but you are right that if it is a yellow stipe (with this colour cap) it is likely to be epipterygia. The edge of the cap also shows scalloping which you often find in epipterygia.

I did read about the elasticity of the 'gel' atop mentioned species |

You can sometimes peel off the whole surface of the cap in one piece and getting just the gill edge for the cheilocystidia is a doddle.
The "Unfortunately" was not aimed at your identification being right but mine being wrong. How about if I go back and edit it to say "Unfortunately I might be wrong"
