| | | Re: crust like fungi for id thanks Nick and Chris,
i had not seen this species before , so i know nothing about them at all, most pictures in my books show this as a white/buff coloured fungi, i used the key in Jordans book and it led me to Phlebia, but i discounted this because of the colour difference, do they change colour as they mature ? or do they vary from specimen to specimen? and is the wrinkled top surface actually the underside?
thanks again,

| | | Re: crust like fungi for id Confusingly yes that is the underside on top.
sometimes you find them as just a tier of white (top) brackets, the above is
somewhat between the two extremes.
To be correct it's probably wrong to say under/upper side as your image is
Phlebia tremellosa in it's resupinate form, year (millions) ago they were no
doubt all this form (as were many other fungi) and this illustrates how over
time evolution took some fungi down the bracket form developmental route.

Cheers J.P. | Hi JP, Many thanks for that piece of info, i'm beginning to see that the brackets are a very interesting side to the fungi world,(up to now i have been more interested in the "mushroom shaped" ones) i shall have start taking a closer look at these often weird but amazing fungi we have,
Brian,
p.s any thoughts of what the bracket in my "small orange fungi for id please" posting could be?? | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
