| | | Daldinia sp? Is this daldinia concentrica?
I know the purplish colour on the second one hints at auricularia auricula-judae, but it wasn't jelly ear because the log wasn't elder and it was quite a solid thing (not flimsy like jelly ear) |

| | | Re: Daldinia sp? Texture of the first reminds me of Xylaria but obviously not.
I don't think I'll be alone in suggesting Exidia glandulosa- the felted black surface being key. |

one shouldn't really be confusing Daldinia (*- see below) with Exidia or Auricularia ; (NB auricula-judae occurs on a wide range of hosts - not just Elder)
* that said, the old idea that if it was of a reasonable size a Daldinia was concentrica and that if it was a smaller one and on burnt twigs/branches (especially Gorse) it was D. vernicosa is, sadly, out of the window: there are seven Daldinias on the GB list and the name vernicosa has disappeared . . . I look forward (when I've got hold of the literature) to getting to grips with the genus
PS - I shall post something Quite Interesting about Exidia glandulosa in a while . . . .
Chris

| | | Re: Daldinia sp? to tell whether it is D.concentrica you can cut it in half. On the cross section there will be 'consentric rings'.....

I say my early days, I still do it now! In this case, aesthetically, it does look similar with that odd hue. I think it all comes down to field experience and experience with handling and examining things you find. |
