| | | Unidentified small Polyporus on Birch Hmm, what do you guys think of this.
Found growing on about a foot-long section of Silver Birch. Fruit bodies in relative abundance given the size of the log. I'd say that there were two or three more mature examples of the fungus on the log, but the remaining two dozen were immature. Interesting first impression, but upon overturning the small log, the pores on the underside immediately suggest a Polyporus or a close relative.
I have retained a specimen of this fungus as to examine it under the microscope on Monday evening, but please do have a go and see what it might be- I did think P. brumalis due to the time of the season, but I've never seen the mentioned species grow as dark as these specimens- it may well be P. brumalis, but I thought better than to assume and so proposed to WAB it
All help, suggestions and comments much appreciated,
Thanks,
Nick |

| | | Re: Unidentified small Polyporus on Birch yes I think you're right with brumalis - from The Polyporaceae of North Europe Vol. 2 by Leif Ryvarden:
"Pileus glabrous, smooth or with delicate adpressed squamules (lens), azonate, along the margin slightly floccose and as young with scattered hispid hairs which disappear relatively rapidly, greyish to umber brown or almost blackish brown when old."
and
"Remarks. Easily recognized from the related P. ciliatus by its large pores. The light brown to greyish stipe separates it from P. varius and P. melanopus which both have a black stipe, at least in the lower part."
cheers
Chris
