| | | Re: Grey Bracket thanks again mal. quick ID straight away. I'll try and find a photo for you that shows the whole fungus because it looks very different to the B. adusta I saw today |

you are correct - it does look very different from Bjerkandera and that's because it is!
this is not really a bracket, in fact it is not a basidiomycete at all; I think this is the ascomycete Kretzschmaria deusta - Ustulina deusta of earlier works; the clue is the mature black portion of the fungus - you can see small raised darker dots on it, these represent the openings of the flask like bodies immersed in the fungal mass ('stroma') within which the spores are formed; it is related to Xylaria and Hypoxylon
the image on the A to Z which appears if you click on the link above is avery young, rather atypical view
see: http://www.grzyby.pl/foto/mj/mj-Ustu...0-138-3803.jpg for a more typical specimen
the grey part is the younger, growing edge of the fungus: beech is a classic host . . .
cheers
Chris

| | | Re: Grey Bracket I found that photo and I think Chris might be right. The name kretchmaria deusta sounds familiar |

| | | Re: Grey Bracket yes that paler one is more like the image on the A to Z - it is a warning to be very careful when looking at young growths of fungi . . .
