| | | Re: Collybia dryophila ??? I think you're spot on there Brian. It's got the flush of red in the stem that is typical of the species and the cap is spot on- no pun intended

Nick | thanks for that Nick,
i thought at first it was a dry C.butyracea , but the stem colour and the fact that it was not at all dry made me think again, and C.dryophila seemed to fit the bill ok,
until i get this microscopic technique sorted out ill never know for sure!(i put samples under the scope but im not at all sure what im looking at )

Hi Sarah,
im just lucky enough to live on the doorstep of Clumber Park with all its vast array of fungi (most of which i've yet to find )and to have the great friendly help and information of this unique forum,(and without the latter i'd be totally up the creek without a paddle ) so, thanks to everyone here .

Brian. | Ooh lucky you Brian living near Clumber, sounds wonderful. And you're right, this is a great forum with great people. Its amazing how much you can learn as well. Not me of course, I'm always on the sidelines just dipping in and out. But you never know, maybe one day I'll knuckle down and steal my son's microscope and give it a whirl! |

Brian. | Hi Brian,
I think you were right the first time with a dry C. butyracea the club shaped stem with a red brown colouration is correct for this species, though it can vary. C. dryophila does not have a club-shaped stem like this but cylindrical and more or less straight.

| | | Re: Collybia dryophila ??? I thought the stipes of Collybia were pretty variable? I thought this showed more red in the stem than you would see in C. butyracea.
EDIT; The stem is actually bigger than I first thought, so Andy will be right |

the stem is quite chunky, although its not easy to tell from the photograph,
it does now seem more probable to be C.butracea afterall.
