| | what wax cap? I had this as H. chlorophana, with a slightly orange cap, yellow at edges, all yellow gills and stem.
But! something doesnt seem quite right in this gill shot - could this perhaps be either ceracea/cantharellus/coccineus?
Thanks
Ken

Very small cap - no stipe pics, sadly, but no veil or ring, concolorous with gills (yellow) and slightly hollow. Sorry - found this!
Cheers

| | | Re: what wax cap? Ah ha ... I've been spending probably a good 5 hours a day for the last 6 weeks trying to figure out those hygrocybes, they are so variable ... to be honest you do need a microscope to figure out quite a few, particularly those yellow, orange or red ones, which doesn't leave many. But ...
I'd say definitely not H coccinea, not even the more orangy version/species H marchii. And it looks viscid which would rule out H cantherellus.
Could be H chlorophana ... cap does look viscid. Also the gills appear to be narrowly adnate or adnexed. Was the stem moist, sticky too, or became moist when handled? I find H chlorophana, or at least the ones on the site I go to, smell quite fruity, almost lemony, fresh ... The gills can be quite variable, some very regular, others much more contorted as in your shot.
It could be H ceracea, though the gills don't look adnate enough, well not in the one with the stipe, on the other hand the one without the stipe could be ...
But they are attractive ...

| | Re: what wax cap? I was originally quite sure it was Chlorophana, but the gills threw me - so your comment about the gills Melanie has been really helpful - that was my concern, so happy with H. Chlorophana again!
Thanks everyone.
