This appears to be Lyophyllum, possibly decastes -any help please ? 
Growing in damp woodland (mixed haw and elder), on rotting floor, (leaves, old wood), very robust, firm, nearly black cap, white stem, no unusual smell, grouped as decastes would be (6 - 10 bodies), partly fused at stem.

Yes, I agree that timing can be crucial sometimes, though I think most of our fungi people search out the fungi queries to help.
