well done to both chris and yourself for definite id ,although i dont know how you and Chris could tell it had gills from the original photo, 
the second photo was only a little clearer, and its still hard to spot them clearly!

| | | Re: Is this a Larch Bolete? for me the clue was at the front the gills coming out towards you . . .plus (a very subtle one this, which TBH I've only just noticed) if you look at the torn portion of the ring you can see the 'ghost' of where the young gills were in contact with the ring as the fruit-body developed, as parallel lines)
perhaps it's down to our screens  . . . I'm currently on a pretty old widescreen HP laptop (though I've always rated the resolution on it . . . )
I think that ring is what said it to me - as Nick has pointed out - I've only seen this 'in the flesh' at an indoor meeting many years ago, but it isn't the sort of thing you forget
