Being a beginner to fungi hunting, I too desperately wanted to find the old Amanita muscaria. I was recently told of a site, which I visited the following day, and there they were, within fifty metres of going into the wood.
Needless to say, a rather loud "yyyeessss!!!" was to be heard reverberating around the wood at that very moment. (Or as PMG might say - "Something of a twitcher's moment").
