| | | Fungus under a log ID Whilst looking under logs for insects I found this rather strange fungus its the first ive seen under a log. The log was part of an old camp fire and was badly burned so I couldnt tell what species it was although this fungus was not directly growing on it. It was in an area of mainly birch woodland.
It was about 4 inches wide and long, and about 2 inches high.
Thankyou |

| | | Re: Fungus under a log ID Hi Dogghound,
You've uncovered an Ascomycete here, which is a family of fungi which 'shoot' spores rather than drop them. They are an odd looking group of fungi, many of them taking up 'cup' shapes.
I think due to its substrate on burnt ground, I'd opt for Peziza echinospora. This species is described as having a white/browning scurfy outer surface and an inner surface which is red/brown. I think this description fits aptly. The common name for this species is Charcoal cup and I'm led to believe that it's relatively common.
