Also - that photo is an absolute stunner - really detailed and shows off the species to a tee.

It covers a lot more, quite a few now no longer considered species but just variations, so when I'm looking at ones that are not quite typical (which with fungi often seems to be the case) it can put me on the right track ... then I usually have to check out the Basidiochecklist to find out the current scientific name.
I was lucky, picked one up last year, secondhand, in as-new condition, through Abebooks. None on there right now for sale, but a good place to look.

Melanie | I have it from a very reliable source that a new Collins book is on the cards next year by Stephan Buczaki supposedly dealing with over 2000 species. If this anything like the last book by Stephan did with Collins it will be worth waiting for and certainly obtaining.

I'd be wary of any but the very recently revised books if you are new to fungi as there has been considerable upheaval in taxonomy recently so older books are now rather confusing ....
Melanie | Yes, I find discrepancies are quite frequent as classification/taxonomy is revised, so up to date is better - interesting that Bon is due out again, cant get hold of it now I think - excellent bible to use in the field.
I'll keep my eyes open for it, thanks Melanie.

Ken | I don't think taxonomy discrepancies are a real problem. Once the id is made the current name can soon be sorted. Just post it on here and you will get the new name pointed out quicker than you can look it up yourself on occasions

Thank you for all the information I have noted it down and have added the Virtual field guide to my favourites so will have a gander at a later date.
Michael Jordan has been mentioned a few times so I think I will source that book as well.
Thanks again Melanie you have been a great help.
