| | | chanterelles in my garden? hello,
I noticed these mushrooms today next to a blueberry plant potted in acid soil. I'm hoping they are chanterelles and, if they are, does anyone know how I keep them growing there! There is a fresh scent to them but my cold prevents me from knowing if it is apricoty!
thank-you in advance,
zoe |

What I think you have here is Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca, which is commonly knowm as the False Chanterelle. Cantharellus cibarius is more of a creamy yellow and has 'folds' rather than gills.

Nick's quite correct in his ID; one strange thing about the False Chanterelle is that it is classed by the fungi experts as a bolete (like ceps, porcini)
Nick is also right about the true Chanterelle having 'folds' rather than true gills - plus if you look at the gills on your fungus you can see that they actually fork from the centre as they go outwards (this is very distinctive and is something the true gilled fungi rarely do)
an excellent photo to be able to name the beast, by the way PS don't eat it! sadly the emphasis has to be on the False rather than the Chanterelle!
best wishes
Chris

| | | Re: chanterelles in my garden? thank-you all for your quick answers-
was so hopeful- they look so enticing and i have been wanting to go find mushrooms- it seemed too good to be true that my favourite ones show up literally on my doorstep!
that said i will still watch them to see how they grow with interest- they are so beautiful.
thank-you for the compliment on the photo!
all the best,
