I was thinking these might have been something like parasols (wishful thinking obviously).
I will keep trying though - I've just ordered Roger Phillips Mushrooms & Stefan Buczacki's Collins Fungi Guide. Hopefully when these arrive, I might get slightly better at ID'ing than the non existent skills I have now.
(But no doubt I will be pestering you guys for some time to come - I do appreciate the help, and the fact that the experts on WAB don't have any holier than thou attitude to beginners).

With the help of the books and help from the more experienced people on here I am sure you will develop quickly.
Armilaria is one of many fungi that can look so different as they develop and the different species of it while all looking similar have there own characteristics which you will learn to recognise (or not )

I know it sounds silly but it's all about recognition. Once you see something the once and you go on to correctly identify it, the chances increase of you being able to identify it next time you find it.
I don't know if this is of interest to you Mike, but I recently posted a lengthy response to Dunlin, who is just getting interested. Link below; A Plea For Help
Don't be put off by the complexity though! It's what makes it exciting and challenging

Nick | Cheers Nick,
I've just had a read of your post to Dunlin, and there is lot of very sensible advice there.
Yes, I don't think I'll be jumping in feet first, as at this stage I'm primarily interested in the taking of the photographs (whenever a particularly nice / undamaged specimen is found) -I'm just trying to identify what I've photographed, rather than having "Unidentified Fungi" tagged against each pic.
But, as you say, this is where the spark of interest comes from, and I'm now finding it equally interesting to learn more than just the names.
I am struggling with the concept of uprooting specimens to get gill shots etc., as I've always had a firm belief in leaving things as you find them. Somewhat silly I know, considering that the fungi will probably have withered in a few hours/days, but old habits etc. etc. (I like to think that the next person along will enjoy finding the specimen as I have - although they'll probably be more likely to boot it than photograph it).
Regards
