OK. I accept that the duplicate entry is a genuine mistake and all eventualities are covered by the correct entry for Trametes versicolor. Would the moderators please delete the entry for Many zoned Polypore

I think if there's one thing worse than making up common names it's the attempt to standardise common names across the world as they've tried to do for the birds - so for instance we're supposed to call the Oystercatcher the Eurasian Oystercatcher, the Wheatear has become the Northern Wheatear and the Jackdaw the Western Jackdaw it's all got very silly. Isn't that why we use scientific names?

The addition of English names does make it easier when first becoming involved with fungi but now I find it totally confusing as I am used to using the latin. If the naming of fungi had some relevance to the species then it may stick a bit better in the old grey matter but some of the new names - honestly.
One thing about using latin is that it opens up a greater understanding of the species and it is fun to work out why the name is as it is.
The funny thing is though moth latin names just don't stick and I think this is because the english names do make one lazy even though they are more user friendly. I could go on all day about the pro's and con's but basically if one is applying an english name to a species of fungi then something apt and descriptive would be best. Turkey Tail is a great one though even though its an import bah!
Cheers
