Nick's question about whether a relationship is involved is interesting as well
it is known that certain boletes do form mutualistic 'links' to other members of the order Boletales; in 2003 in Nick's home area (at Kelling Heath) I found lots of Suillus variegatus growing with one of the gilled 'boletes' Chroogomphus rutilus the Copper Spike see attached pic
as has appeared elsewhere on WAB, the relationship between the Common Earthball Scleroderma citrinum and the Parasitic Bolete Pseudoboletus parasiticus is now considered to be not parasitic at all
and of course earthballs are now also considered to be members of the Boletales
hope that's not too clap-trappy for everyone
best wishes to all
Chris
