| | | Ascocoryne sp ? this was growing on a fallen birch trunk,
the first picture shows what i hope i have identified correctly as Ascocoryne sarcoides
this second picture shows what i thought was also Ascocoryne sarcoides, it was not until i put the picture up on the computer that i noticed it was growing on a black knobbly base, also what i first took to be immature Hypoxlon multiforme or daldinia sp also had the ascocoryne growing from them
(to left and right of main body), is the black growth part of the Ascocoryne (i know there are two stages of growth with the Ascocoryne , but none of the pictures i have been able to find show any signs of this black growth) or is it something else entirely ?

| | | Re: Ascocoryne sp ? Sarcoides or cylichnium - can you tell them apart in the field if so - reveal all he, he. Hypoxylon multiforme seems to be there but as for what the Ascocoryne is growing from - if indeed it is on the multiforme then it is new to me. Interesting anyway!
Cheers

FP/OMD | i'll settle for Ascocoryne sp, i take it that they are both the same species (the pink ones) and the smaller black ones are Hypoxylon multiforme ?
the two Ascocoryne where growing within a couple of feet of each other(on the same log) ,
is it possible that the Ascocoryne was growing through the Hypoxylon(if thats what it is) ? |

| | | Re: Ascocoryne sp ? I think you are safe when saying they are both the same species and it does highlight the variability. Looks like it is growing through the other species as well!
Just as a pointer though - It seems sarcoides is always more prone to be brain like in appearance at a certain stage so maybe this can be positively ID's when in this state!
Cheers
