I am sure with your photographic skills you would be able to get some (even more) great photos. If I can produce this with the camera set to take half a dozen photos and just hand held just think what you could do.
Try MycoImage this is nearer what I would expect from you  This is the chap who showed me how to work the software.

I feel that it's in the realm of micrographs that CombineZ really comes into its own

Have you looked at this software Keith's Image Stacker ?
It is designed for astronomy but it is image stacking so might be worth trying out.
