Cheers

| | | Re: Ischnoderma benzoinum Due to the moss, Beech and Birch leaves atop the what I would presume (for those reasons) is a Deciduous log, I'd say that this is unlikely to be Phaeolus schweinitzii. As we know, it grows exclusively on Conifers and it has a distinctive yellow banding around the edges of the fruit body. Also, this species tends to be rather more substantial that this.
Don't quote me on that though...it's probably a duff deduction
EDIT; I SEE PINE NEEDLES! |

| | | Re: Ischnoderma benzoinum No bother at all - I just had a hunch and thought I'd air it (so said Quasimodo on a hot day). Hopefully full confirmation of substrate will follow. Thanks for the pointers though!

| | | Re: Ischnoderma benzoinum Oh dear, my poor photo really dosen't help.
The substrate is a very old (covered in moss) scots pine by the look of it.
The small bracket in the centre of photo is pores upwards showing the
white colour, Phaeolus schweinitzii would be yellow.
What i can't illustrate is the odour (strong benzine like).
The small bracket is now on a glass slide to see if i get some spores
overnight.

Anyway this species (first time found) was no exception in wanting to be
somewhat certain.
Many fungi left on a slide over night sport an enormous colourfull spore print,
after one night these appeared to have left nothing on the slide, so left for a
further night and no apparent print but best look under the scope.
X1000
Well the image isn't as good as i could see down the scope, there were few
spores but luckily they match with those on bioimages for this species.
So i now feel confident cybershot can record this species for his patch, it's
a rather good area.

Cheers mate and here's to more success at Bowdown Wood on Sunday.
