| | | Hygrocybe or Hygrophorus sp ?? found today in short grass near to pine trees, in troop of 7 or 8 specimens
cap approx 35mm across, stem approx 30mm tall, both cap and stem very slimy/sticky, stem and gills pale creamy yellow, colour more pronounced on stem,
the stem has a swollen area near to cap (not to clear in photos- clearer in real life), as described in Jordans book for Hygrocybe hypothejus, is this what i have or is this an Hygrocybe sp ?

| | | Re: Hygrocybe or Hygrophorus sp ?? Herald of Winter (HYGROPHORUS Hypothejus) is what you have got. In some specimens you will find a band around the top of the stipe of a beautiful orange colour.
In our area they rarely come out until we have had a frost.

FP/OMD | Hi,
thanks for that, it does seem to be a good match for H.hypothejus, they just did not seem right for a waxcap somehow,

Mal | Hi Mal,
thanks for the confirmation, we've had a couple of sharp frost up here a few days ago (hard enough to have put paid to my nasturtiums which were still flowering well ),
i will look out for more of them over the next week or two and see if i can spot the orange band you mention,
