| | | Re: fungi id please hello Keith
the first one looks like the early stages of what has been given the English name of Branching Oyster Pleurotus cornucopiae; there are quite a lot of laterally-attached gilled fungi and they belong to a range of often unrelated groups; the feature which points me towards that name is the way the gills run down the short stem and then seem to criss-cross - the books sometimes use the technical term 'anastomosing'; this species is very often seen on dead elm and when young is edible (it's related to the Oyster Mushroom) but please show the actual fungus to someone who knows what they are talking about before eating anything - don't rely on this ID! Interestingly this fungus - if I've named it correctly - is common in England but much less so in Scotland
the other fungus is, I'm pretty sure, Trametes versicolor the Turkeytail (I don't generally like the move towards trying to give every fungus an English name - but this one seems very appropriate) the scientific name versicolor means 'changing colour' and is also very apt; In some older fungus books you may find this under the name 'Coriolus versicolor'
I hope that helps
good, informative photo's, by the way - I like the limited palette of the Trametes in particular
best wishes
Chris

| | | Re: fungi id please Turkey Tail is one of the few English names that work. I usually hold out my finger when leading a foray so as to represent the turkey's body and plonk a bit of the bracket near the knuckle. Face on other forayers get the drift.
Well they say they do!
