| | | Ganoderma pfeifferi? I found this growing on a log near my college. For weeks I overlooked it thinking it was just an old artists bracket or similar. Then Deer Stalker uploaded his photo of it into the Gallery
I then thought "thats familiar" So I went to the log and its still there! Is it Ganoderma pfeifferi. sorry about the bad photo. I am going back tomorrow with my good camera.
p.s. How do you pronounce it? |

| | | Re: Ganoderma pfeifferi? we would probably call it 'fifer' (to rhyme with 'lifer') 'eye'
the strict rule is that the name should be pronounced as closely to how the person would be called in their own language - that would mean you would also pronounce the 'p' but that's going too far IMO they probably do that in German speaking countries . . .
I seem to recall being told that the surface of this fungus burns if a lighter is held above it (or am I getting it mixed up with G. resinaceum?)
seems like a cool thing to try on November 5th
don't blame me if the whole thing - fungus and stump - go up
WAB accepts no responsibility for such actions
cheers
Chris

| | | Re: Ganoderma pfeifferi? KT, don't brake a lump of, if possible just cut out a wedge shape,
the wedge can be placed on top (upsidedown) to show gills in same
photo, and often you can go back next year and be impressed at the
way the bracket will self heal.
Though often this may not be to important, if it is something rare then
a cut wedge is plenty enough to send in post when expert opinion is
required.
I know i have broken brackets at times

| | | Re: Ganoderma pfeifferi? the one that I took from the stump was the smaller one. I haven't killed the bracket because there was a much bigger one. |

| | | Re: Ganoderma pfeifferi? I did the KOH test and the bracket discoloured. It is in fact hapalopilus nutilans. I shall have to get my Gallery photo changed now |

| | | Re: Ganoderma pfeifferi? unfortunately its not H. nutilans because the bracket didn't really discolour, it was slightly rotted, and also H. nutilans is a smaller bracket. according to Philips G. pfeifferi grows on old oak stumps. This bracket was in fact on an oak stump where H. nutilans usually grows on trees.
