Julie  | Despite the lack of microscopic evidence I think you have nailed this one down as close as possible with your determined investigation (even managing a matching spore print), and certainly to the satisfaction of the hobbyist nature of your enquiry, based on research of the popular references. Well done!

P.S. I was amazed at the variety you showed me in the park on Thursday, especially as I had only scant satisfaction after three days in the New Forest and a day in Minley Wood this week.

there's a lot to be said for having a little 'patch' of your own; you can get a really good picture of how the fungi 'work' that way; while I also like to get to different far-away and unfamiliar sites; there are a couple near home a try to visit at least once a month (for better or worse)
