some of the popular books suggest that if a puffball is found growing on wood it has to be Lycoperdon pyriforme the stump puffball
this is not strictly true; these common puffballs L. perlatum were growing on a fallen mossy trunk a good 80 centimetres above the ground
in this fresh stage one hopes that people could tell what they had found, but when you encounter older fruitbodies a little care needs to be exercised . . .
