| | | Cortinarius sp ?? Found this growing on an area of mown grass ,with birch , alder and willow close by,
the cap measured 30 to 50 mm and the stem was about the same in height,
it has a partial veil to the gills ,
would this be a Cortinarius ?? or is there something else that has a veil to the gills ??

I`m a learner but I think the veil across the gills is pretty much diagnostic of Cortinarius sp. As regards which species, you will find that the experts often shy away from this genera. Basically you`ve got 2 hopes, none what so ever and Bob! (bet somebody comes along to make me a liar)

Pete | Hi Pete,
athough ive been interested in fungi for years , its only over the last two years or so ive taken a more detailed interest in them, and although its getting easier to id some of them , i still rate myself as a learner too,(dont know if ill ever progress much above that position either ,
i think you are right about getting identified as to species , confirmation that it is a cortinarius(or not) would be great though, i seem to remember something else having a veiled cap, but cant remember what it was , or where i read it !
