| | | Sherwood Forest Fungi for ID please Sherwood Forest (Birklands) 25/26 Oct 2008
Found growing on an old fallen Oak
Cap dia 25mm
Stem 50x4mm
Found growing at the base of Silver BirchI thought these were Pholiota Sqamosa, but the flatten cap confused me.
These two specimen were found growing about 100mts apart, but in different habitat. Are the both Clavulinopsis_helvola ?
First, growing at the side of a path in grass.
There were several of these all growing in a wet mossy area.
Height 15mm x 4mm wide
Any guidance appreciated
Les

| | | Re: Sherwood Forest Fungi for ID please hi Les top Mycena sp. (probably M. galericulata a name often thrown around with abandon, but I always prefer to check under the 'scope - if its got 2-spored basidia I'm happy) middle I think you are right with Pholiota squarrosa bottom top one is very probably helvola - I'm going to sound boring here but I would again check under the microscope - this clavarioid fungus has knobbly spores - very unusual in this group and immediately diagnostic, otherwise one is guessing . . . very bottom one could be an odd form of helvola I suppose (see comments above )
best wishes

Chris | With a hand lens (Address of supplier on request from Chris ) you can usually see the anastomosing of the gills before resorting to a microscope.(that's little veins running from one gill to the next.
