| | | Productive old oak I visited an old rotting oak today. Having produced Volveriella bombycina earlier in the year it was replaced by this oyster
and has that has been replaced by a Pholiota sp which I think could be aurivella.

| | | Re: Productive old oak Good detailed shot of the 'anastomosing' gills there Mal leaving no doubt this is Pleurotus cornucopiae
The Pholiota caps look very dry, but I'm sure you are correct with aurivella
I wish the Oak logs near me were so productive.

Neil. | The caps on the young specimens were very sticky.

After a very wet June and July we have only had and inch and a half in August. September has set off with a bang though with thunderstorms last night so hopefully after the rest in August it should bring a good flush now.

Mal | We had plenty of rain in Sheffield in August, it seemed to rain at some point most days, though my pond level has dropped suddenly in the last few days, must be the wind .... In fact the fungi have gone a bit quiet so I was thinking maybe we've had too much rain rather than too little. Sheffield, or at least my garden, seemed to miss the thunderstorms yesterday as the pond hadn't been topped up. But I was over your way yesterday and caught them, (well Malton/Pickering/Scarborough area). Maybe the rain follows me around .. went to Northumberland at the end of August, when there was a heatwave down south, but it was raining up there ...

| | | Re: Productive old oak Up here in Weardale we've been pretty constantly damp but no real soakers (until this Monday!) The reservoir is flowing over the spillway, unusual for late summer, but it's still been a light season for fungi so far. Except, of course, for the amanitas. Along with the blusher onslaught there seems to have been amanitas of every description popping up everywhere. Other than that pretty quiet so far. |
