| | | Re: fungi ID hi Ian
it's easy to put this into a genus, but that's about it
it's what would have been called a Coprinus (ink-cap); this genus has now been (justifiably) split into several more
your fungus looks to be one of the group now called 'Parasola'; Parasola plicatilis is a likely candidate (given it's probable grassland habitat) but there are others, all differentiated by spore size and shape so that's as far as I would want to take it
despite the name inkcap the Parasola group don't go all gooey but more 'papery' as shown in your photograph
to get a species name you could have picked it after photographing it, and dried it gently (popped in an old envelope and dried near a radiator - this wouldn't need much!); all the micro-characters are there for posterity . . . then PM me and I'd give you an address to send it to and I'd check it for you) this isn't a general ID service but in this instance would be OK
PS - I should have said at the start - what a lovely, atmospheric shot (an example of how reduced depth of field can be a strong positive)
best wishes

| | | Re: fungi ID Yes, that's a smashing shot, don't think I've seen an Inkcap portrayed like this before.
By the way Chris, my mega-parcel is on its way to you, containing some strange jelly eggs (absolutely no idea what they are ) I packed them with damp tissue to keep them fresh - in fact some are beginning to hatch already. Plus loads of other stuff.
Neil.
I jest. |
