fungi habitats

I went for a walk today through ainsdale sand dunes. Its a great place if you've never been. Its a couple of miles south of southport. Its good for seabirds, birds of prey, theres plenty of rabbits and a healthy population of foxes.

Any way before i start rambling on, when i was walking back through the dunes i noticed some fungi growing out of the sand. sorry no picture as i didnt take the camera. I was suprised to see fungi growing in sand i didnt think there would be any nutrient for them to survive there.

It got me thinking, is there any place/environment where fungi dont grow. Do they grow above the snow line for instance?

the dunes are a VERY good place for fungi!

Hi Dunlin,

Prof Bruce Ing, the Myxomycete expert, published an article on Myxemycetes above the snow line a few years back, so I guess fungi too must survive there, but in what shape or form I do not know offhand.

Aparently there are plenty of (small fungi) in artic areas including
those associated with algae in the form of lichens.
An interesting point is that natural waters (including polar) contain
floating fungi.
