Unknown Bracket on young Oak.

Found this Bracket growing on young Oak ...the spores bruised a little yellow in colour..



Can you confirm if these are Stump Puffballs. they stood between 4-5inches high..havent come across them being so tall before.....

1. looks to me like a ganoderma
2. I think you are right with lycoperdon pyriforme. (unless theres another lycoperdon species I haven't heard of that it could be)

I think your bracket is more likely to be either Ischnoderma resinosum or Inonotus radiatus sorry no English names

Ive just gone onto Google..and found..Ischoderma resinosum - Resinous polpore...and Inonotus radiatus - Alder Bracket.. plus with this last one there is reference to it on page 225 of ' pocket nature fungi'.by Shelley evans and Geoffrey kibby..

Alright so I missed the Alder Bracket but if Ischoderma resinosum doesn't justify being in the top 1000 for the allocation of English names then its English name is Ischoderma resinosum

If there is trouble finding a common English name you can always pinch one from the French. Like Boletus edulis (Cep). I can never understand why we don't use the English name (Penny Bun) more often, although I am just as guilty as anyone.

Or you could pinch one from the Romans Boletus edulis
