The gills to me, ring out Tricholoma, but the cap, Hebeloma.
I have no clue if it's either of those though |

| | | Re: ID please I think you may be right with Hebeloma Nick, possibly mesophaeum as these can look very sticky when moist.

| | | Re: ID please I also think that it's reminiscent of H. mesophaeum - it would have been so useful if the young specimen on the left had been carefully picked and laid on its side to see whether it had the cortina characteristic of that species in its early stages
I've checked Jan Vesterholt's monograph on Hebeloma and based on macro-characters it matches fairly well
a hint when collecting Hebelomas is to look for traces of a veil in the youngest specimens possible; in older specimens traces can be found on the stipe which has to be handled as little as possible when collecting; the fruitbody on the right has been rather over-handled I fear

| | | Re: ID please I didn't pick this out as Hebeloma mesophaeum as the gill colour looks wrong in all the pictures I found. I've only recently started trying to identify fungi and am finding out how difficult it is!! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
