| | | Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus sulphureus) Had a good day yesterday and finished off by finding a splendid Chicken of the Woods. I forgot my camera and went back today in the pouring rain to take some pictures of (a now) rather soaked fungus.
Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus sulphureus)
Also found (amoungst others):
Boletus edulis (Cep - two of)
Laccaria amethystina (Amethyst Deceiver)
Suillus luteus (Slippery Jack)
Hydnum repandum (Hedgehog mushroom)
Macrolepiota procera (Parasol mushroom)
Lepista nuda (Wood Blewit)
Armillaria mellea (Honey fungus)
Out of interest it was 11 days after the last full moon. The French say that this is the ideal time (well, 10 days) for fungi like Boletus edulis. Maybe there is something in it |

| | | Re: Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus sulphureus) Had B. edulis, two dozen L. nuda, half dozen L. saeva, and 500g A. mellea.
Plus I've got dried, what was a kilogram of C. tubaeformis, C. cornucopioides and P. undulatus. I put some in a risotto today and they were delicious once rehydrated. A. mellea are delish aren't they!?
Here's my C. tubaeformis;
Me frying some up

| | | Re: Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus sulphureus) Nick, did you find the C. tubaeformis this weekend? Not much on my patches since the middle of September.
Dried mushrooms (well certain types) are underrated. As is A. mellea. I have been trying to convince many people this since I first tried it last season.
And - do you always wear black |

| | | Re: Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus sulphureus) A useful tip in these situations where there is an abundance of C. cornucopioides and C. cibarius is not to mix them together in ones basket - the black of C. cornucopioides stains the yellow of C. cibarius which does not look quite so nice in a posh girolle omelette and the wife/girlfriend moans about all the black marks. I now, as in this case, use a cloth bag to keep them apart. |
