| | | Russula ochroleuca or claroflava?
in a predominantly pine plantaion. It was wet underfoot (isn't everywhere at the moment) but not a bog or mossy and don't think it would be normally |

| | | Re: Russula ochroleuca or claroflava? These are R. ochroleuca. R. claroflava grow on damp ground, usually with Birch. Russula ochroleuca definitely grow with Pines, so that'll be what they are.
For future notes, when you're unsure of if the species is R. claroflava or R. ochroleuca, pluck a specimen from the ground, crush it and smell it. If you've got a delicate sense of smell, you might be able to pick up a smell of stewed apples. If you can, chances are it's R. claroflava. The colour difference between the species is more noticeable than you'd think. R. claroflava is coloured similar to that of cheap mustard, the sort that is lighter than real mustard. R. ochroleuca is quite pallid, and isn't as bold as the other. |
