| | | Mushroom with a woody stem for ID Small mushrooms in a very mixed wood. Mostly conifer and birch, but also oak in the area.
The most notable characteristic is a very woody stem.
I've never seen mushrooms with such 'woody' stems - is this unusual or are there a number of types like this? Could someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks

It definitely does seem to look similar to the pictures of the various Laccaria varieties in the Gallery. Possibly Laccaria laccata, although it doesn't quite look right. I doubt I have enough information to be able to help narrow it down, but it helps me the next time I find them. |

Chris | Most of the Laccaria's have tough woody stems. Having seen your pics and noticed small scales on the cap of the close up, I would say L. proxima.

| | | Re: Mushroom with a woody stem for ID Thanks. I doubt there were any eucalyptus - it is a very mixed wood, but not that mixed!
I had seen the pictures of the L. proxima, but I can't tell from my photos or remember the intricate details, so I wasn't sure. But hopefully next time I see them I will know what to look for, although from what I have read it does seem like some of these you need to look at the spores to be sure.
