| | | Unknown orange mushroom I found this orange mushroom in a mixed forest, although mostly conifer. I think they are all the same type, but that is based mainly on the fact that they were all in the same vicinity.
The gills on the underside seem particularly interesting in that they don't look like normal mushroom gills, but that could be just because it is a young specimen. I didn't want to turn them all over to see if they all looked the same. I can't find any other orange mushrooms that have the same gills.
Are they distinctive enough or are they one of those that could be one of many options....
Thanks

| | | Re: Unknown orange mushroom Hi Chris,
The first photo shows what appears to be Cystolepiota moelleri - a scarce species.
The other shots are Hydnum repandum.

| | | Re: Unknown orange mushroom INFAMY, INFAMY, they've all got it in for me !!
Oh, all right then, I'm probably wrong on both counts.
My knowledge on Hydnum sp. is limited because I've still yet to find one (he said sulking) - I was going by what I read in FOS - they seem to think that there is so little difference between H.repandum and rufescens, that they are probably the same species.
But if they are listed as separate species in the British check list, then I shall concede to Neil.
As for the first photo being Cystoderma or Cystolepiota - It could be either, but going by the law of averages - Nick is probably right again.
(Grrrr...)

| | | Re: Unknown orange mushroom Thanks guys
I've just been reading up about them both and I see the controversy!
At least I now should realise that they are different, but I'm not sure I could tell more than that in future.
