| | | Terrible smelling mushroom for ID I found this mushroom today. It looks like it is probably old and has possibly lost diagnostic characteristics, but it hadn't lost its smell! Smelt like rotting flesh.
Is this enough for an ID?
Thanks

| | | Re: Terrible smelling mushroom for ID Hopefully this might help. Sorry, should also have mentioned that it was pretty big - at least 20cm diameter. There was also not much of a stem. |

| | | Re: Terrible smelling mushroom for ID This is a very distinctive mushroom Chris and I can't put my finger on it! It's on the tip of my tongue!!!
The bad smell was probably due to age/the infestation of mould.

I think this is a rotting Clitocybe nebularis.

As for the 'fishy pong' - what do you expect a rotten fungus to smell like ?
Neil.
P.S. So what did it taste like Nick (on the tip of your tongue)...fish ?

| | | Re: Terrible smelling mushroom for ID Thanks guys.
That is the first time I have smelt a rotten fungus and I will try stick to picking fresh ones from now, although it does seem like Clitocybe nebularis has a foul odour anyway.
There was also this large dry mushroom in the same area and I guess that it may have also been the same thing. |
