Bracket Fungi Identification?

I found this this large fungi morning growing from a tree at just over head hight. It is very white underneath and grey/white on top.





Is it possible to make a positive id from the photo?

I'd say Oyster Mushroom, but there are a number of similar species. I'm sure an expert will be along to ID it soon.

yes it does look very oysterish, unusual 'bottom' feature too !!!!!

I think we can only say it is a Pleurotus species from what is shown here, and that it is possible to speculate that it may be ostreatus.

It is easy just distinguish between the two main species just look at the stalk oops it doesn't have one

They made a very nice meal. Lightly sautéed, added double cream and reduced slightly, then over al dente Penne and sprinkled with good Parmesan. Delicious!

Even though in this case the fungus you've questioned for ID is fairly distinctive, I really don't recommend using an internet forum to identify for consumption. It's a dangerous business if you don't know what you're looking at- when you do, it's a joy...but just be careful

I absolutely agree with Nick on this point. You only have to read the papers to discover what a deadly business eating wild fungi is.

Although I've often wondered if there are any bracket fungi that are poisonous? I don't know of any.

I agree and that's why I served a small portion to the wife at lunchtime, just to double check before eating them myself.
