| | | Fungi for ID Could you please help me to ID these Fungi. These photos were taken in a new wood that I haven't searched for fungi in before - special permission from the owner. Loads of pictures, but starting off with these three. Hope you can help and the pics are good enough. Jane
1. Is this Dryad's Saddle Polyporus squamosus ? There were loads of these around the trunk of a willow or birch. They had obviously fallen off, and were now decaying. They were a very strange spongy texture and very large (dinner plate sized and bigger).
2. Really not sure what this is, but the stem is very distinctive as the lines go up in a spiral. Very small little fungi, only about 10cm high.
3. We thought that this might be a False Death Cap Amanita citrina due to the ring and bulbous base which seemed to have a basal bulb with volval rim that the books describe. Very white texture and smelled of raw potatoes. Couldn't see any patches on the cap... but seemed right. |

| | | Re: Fungi for ID First one is a dead Polyporus leptocephalus. Second a Mycena?
Not sure on the third, what was the base like? |

| | | Re: Fungi for ID Thanks Nick. In my book it calls P. leptocephalus a "smallish" fungi. Dimensions 1-10cm dia. This one above was HUGE in comparison. Larger than a large dinner plate at least 40cm dia.
I'll have a look at the Mycena's
3rd one was "bulbous base which seemed to have a basal bulb with volval rim" (as said above). Hope this helps. |

| | | Re: Fungi for ID I tell you what, I must've been asleep while writing that. I appear to have missed all that I wanted to know- what a divv.
All I know now is that the 1st is Polyporus. The third is likely to be A. citrina what with your description of the base.
Thanks for tolerating me |

| | | Re: Fungi for ID Looking at the edge of number 1 it is very thin.
I wonder if we may be looking at an upside down Piptoporus betulinus
that lost its porus tissue a long time ago. Just an idea.

| | | Re: Fungi for ID Here are two more pics of no 1. As you can see it has a proper "stem" (now black) that was attached to the tree (about 4ft up the trunk). Don't think it can be Piptoporus betulinus
Does this help at all? |

| | | Re: Fungi for ID The Mycena is probably polygramma it is noted for having longitudinal groves down the stem.
