Lacquered Bracket?

is this lacquered bracket. it was growing in a tree stump

I could be wrong but to me that looks like a young Blushing Bracket Daedaleopsis confragosa. Was it growing on willow?

it was hard to tell because it was a really small tree stump . The woodland I found it in is mostly coniferous with a few sycamores and birch mixed in

It looks a lot like Heterobasidion annosum - Root Rot so I'm guessing it was on conifer ?

I always used to be caught out by this one yonks ago, it is of course Heterobasidion annosum (looking very glossy as it's young)

When I first joined the WAB, I got involved in a thread about this species saying/agreeing it only occurs on Pine and that where it seems to be on Birch, the Birch is probably growing from an old Pine stump.

I think fellow Wabbers were too polite to disagree with me at the time - pity, because this year I've found H.annosum on an upturned Birch growing very obviously on the roots and loads of it too !! (and no Pine to be seen)
