| | | Can anybody help me locate Kretzschmaria deusta Have been working in the Arb industry for the last 15 years, and although my interest in the many different varieties of Tree decaying Fungi has been slowly growing over the last couple of years, I have to date not knowingly seen, due to it being relatively difficult to spot, the above mentioned.
I have consulted the usual suspects, Mattheck, Lonsdale, AIE etc.......but am of the opinion that first hand experience is where real knowledge can be gained.
So, I would really appreciate a nod in the direction of a Tree in situe that is home to Kretzschmaria, preferably within my locality which is North London.
Many thanks in advance of any help offered.
David

I'm very puzzled by this thread, you say you have been in the 'arb' industry for 15 years and have never seen K.deutsa ?
It is extremely common especially on wounds or cut stumps of Fagus
There are 2 stages: the white conidial asexual stage, and next, the black crusty Hypoxylon like sexual stage, but in between you have a grey appearance when it is possible to confuse it with Bjerkandera adusta.
Microscopically, the former is an Ascomycete and the latter a Basidiomycete.
Neil. ........ hmmm thinks, I should be charging for this tutorial. |

| | | Re: Can anybody help me locate Kretzschmaria deusta Guess it's just not as sexy as laetiporus, Fistulina or Meripilus.
I'm sure I have seen K d, but has not registered in me cortex as prominantly as it possibly should have.
Thanks for the additional info Neil.
Have got a lead today from a TO in Haringey, N London. Will follow up next week.
If any one else has locations, I'd still be very grateful.

| | | Re: Can anybody help me locate Kretzschmaria deusta A sign that K.deutsa is present but not fruiting are the large black smooth patches on old Beech wood - referred to as Spalted Beech.
These can also be caused by other Hypoxylon and Xylaria spp. and are merely physical mycelial barriers put out by opposing strains as if saying "Oi !! this is my patch"

| | | Re: Can anybody help me locate Kretzschmaria deusta Hi there, if you are still interested in Kretzschmaria deusta or are willing to advise a stumbling soul in this field, I'm in need of help. I have found K.deusta on the outside of some bark of a fallen tree. It is doing the traditional thing that it does with new growth being grey with white edges and last years crusty growth etc., all well and good. But then there is growth on the inside of a hollow ash. It is thin growth, can't be separated from the wood, not producing spores etc. It looks like it is on several layers of the heartwood and as one layer peels off through decay there it is on an underneath layer. It looks like the feeding layers exposed. I can't prove it is K. deusta, microscopic examination has got me no where. How do I prove it is K. deusta? I'm in Stoke Newington, North London. I have the fresh growth in one place and this odd growth in another. Help!!!!!!

Hi David,
Just up and opposite the leg of mutton pond on the right hand side, there is a small area where a small compost heap has been kept. Just behind and to the left of the heap is a beech tree that has Kretzschmaria all over its base, its obvious, can't miss it.

Andy | Hi Andy,
came across that one not long after I first posted this thread funnily enough.
Found that one particularly interesting as there's new advantitious root growth either side of the dead butress roots.
Saprophyte stimulating the new roots?
Thanks for bumping & getting back.
Regards

There is another mass growth on a large, dead, old oak stump at the Hampstead gate end of the South Wood, Kenwood. Its just as you enter the wood from the old, wooden, Beech mount gate.
Best
