| | | Conifer encrustment query Can one of our very kind experts give me some clue as to what this is?
It was growing on the trunk of a living, ornamental conifer of the cupressaceae family.
Cheers

It looks like Kretzschmaria deusta but might just be a young Bjerkandera adusta. The only problem is both of those are supposed to grow on broad leaved trees
Mal
Bjerkandera can occur rarely on conifer

| | | Re: Conifer encrustment query B.adusta is the obvious candidate here, but I have never known of it growing on conifer.
I would imagine Mal has searched the BFRDI and come accross a case of a find on conifer, so if that is the case then I'm sure Kew would like this to be sent on to them. This is an important find.

Neil. | Flipping `eck Neil, you`ve just sent shivers up my spine!
Re sending to Kew; several problems arise, 1. It was on a big lump of wood but could have been sawn down, 2. We had a massive bonfire after digging out two of said conifers, there is absolutely nothing left... b****r!
Sorry

| | | Re: Conifer encrustment query It's no big deal Pete, what you could do though is send a photo on to the Mycology Dept at Kew including as much information as you can i.e. the 6 figure grid ref, the type of wood, date it was found, and apologies for burning it and the direction of where the bonfire smoke was travelling (just my little joke !).
The photo is convincing enough as it is. Just mention that you made enquiries on WAB initionally and that being told it is suspected it is B.adusta (or possibly K.deusta) and there being few cases of it being found on conifer wood, it was suggested Kew may be interested.
Don't forget to enclose an SAE if you want a reply as, as you can imagine, they get hundreds of enquiries every day.
Neil. ............. and do let us know what they say. |

Neil. ............. and do let us know what they say. | Got a very prompt reply by email today... The pictures could well be of Bjerkandera adusta, which sometimes produces effused (rather than bracket-like) fruitbodies on the underside of limbs. It does occasionally grow on conifers and we have material here on spruce, larch, yew, etc.
Thanks all
