| | | Trametes? on unusual substrate Anston Stones Wood 28 Sept 2008
A most enjoyable foray with Wildlifesnapper, Neil, searching the woods and grasslands.
Found in grassland on limestone, with s birch and oak nearby.
It looks like common Trametes versicolor, but it is the substrate that is so unusual (in my limited experience)
Your comments and observations welcomed
Les

Was there a log just out of the picture? It looks to have been broken off from its original attachment and then been held in mid air by the stems which it had grown round. I have often seen twigs trapped like this but the trametes has always been attached.

| | | Re: Trametes? on unusual substrate You can't catch us out Les, very clever though.
For the folks back home, this was obviously growing on a log, and as it grew, slowly enclosed some grass stalks whatever.
Then along comes someone out for a bit of fun, sees the possibilities, so carefully separates the fungi from the log, hides the log, and takes the photo.
Elementary, dear Watson.

You probably have the solution there. Recently, the area has had the anual grass cutting, so the original log must have been disturbed.
Well done Holmes.
