Found this on Staurday growing on an oak tree in a paddock,,, Wondered what it was,,,It was about 250 mm diameter

It is a young specimen of Inonotus dryadeus. There's quite a bit about in N Yorks

just a question: why is dryads saddle called polyporus squamosus when this is called inonotus "dryadeus"?  |

Well the common names aren't exactly named after the Latin in all cases. Polyporus squamosus is named the Dryad's Saddle due to its shape, but the latin name broken down means; 'Polyporus' i.e which genus it belongs to and 'Squamosus'- describing the squamules atop the species. |
