Geoglossum difforme?
I found this growing in moss on a rotten log.
Trying to id it as I've never seen anything like it before (i'm a newb)

I didn't cut any off them up as they looked quite happy where they were.

More likely a Xylaria species which are renowned for their wood substrate. I'm not aware of any Geoglossum species that grow on wood.

This is either Xylaria polymorpha in its adolescence or (looks more like) Xylaria longipes. Both are common species.

Ah. missed those. Think you are prob right, but the geoglossum I mentioned. Phillips says it can be found growing on moss or rotting wood.

Geoglossum difforme isn't in Phillips recent (2006) edition. Maybe Geoglossum difforme is previous synonymy?
