| | | Pretty Cortinarius Sp. for ID help Had a brilliant days mushrooming today.
Found these pretty looking things. I've narrowed it down to a Cortinarius, but can't get my head around which one it is. The annoying thing is I've seen this in one of my dads books.
They were growing at the bottom of a sweet chestnut tree.
Couldn't distinguish the smell due to stuffed up nose, but it definitely had one and it wasn't standard mushroom.
No real bruising.
Spores rusty.
Mature specimens had a brownish cap.
Any help much appreciated.
There'll be two more threads in a minute with two more I'm stuck with.

| | | Re: Pretty Cortinarius Sp. for ID help Oh yes, a genus containing 10,000 plus species is bound to have one or two pretties
I agree, they are beautiful- I love their structures. I decided to focus on Cortinarius because a) There's a massive black spot regarding ID'ing the species and b) I find the varieties so fascinating. |

| | | Re: Pretty Cortinarius Sp. for ID help Hello Funky Porcine,
Was there definately no Spruce nearby ?
Was this in a hilly or mountainous area ? (although I shouldn't think so with Sweet Chestnut)

| | | Re: Pretty Cortinarius Sp. for ID help @Nick, I'm chuffed to pieces that my IDing has improved so much that I can narrow it down to 1 in 10000
@Fairplay No spruce (that I noticed), I think it was mainly oak with the odd beech tree and a scattering of sweet chestnut trees.
It was in a wood on a hill in Hardwick Park - really boggy underfoot. Heavy clay soil
Look forward to seeing the suggestions. I'm off to chop this lil lot up for drying. |

| | | Re: Pretty Cortinarius Sp. for ID help That doesn't completely rule out Cortinarius cinnamoviolaceus, the cut stem has the same colour, but the caps are more brown than those in this thread.
Trouble is, I've absolutely no idea if this occurs in Britain.
