| | | Fungi common name sources I was wondering does anyone know of any threads here, or a reliable internet reference where I can find out about the origin of fungi common names?
Thank you

At the moment the British Mycological Society website seems to be down. But this might be an option. I've just been using their database to find common English names for fungi for the "guess who" game.
I tried to find you a full index as a starting point, but there is an error in the website which prevents me from doing so.
Maybe later?
Edit - some here: http://users.quista.net/sjgall/Nicknames.htm

( let me guess you get your common name because you are a witch and live in a hedge? ) |

People do think it's a good name for me, and I do LOVE ancient hedges and boundaries, and I've often been called a witch (by non-witches) , but the origin is thought to be this: Quote: |
The words hedge and hag have the same root, and it is possible that the original use of the word hag denoted 'one who sits on the hedge' - one who is on the boundary between the known and unknown worlds and acts as a conduit between the two (stemming from times when the hedge separated the village from the 'great unknown'). Hedge witches will frequently spend a lot of time in altered states of consciousness, whether performing kitchen magic, healing, or giving one of the Gods a good talking to. While they have a lot of respect for the Gods, they won't put up with nonsense, and if the Gods stick their noses in where they're not wanted, they'll tell them so! They tend to have a very personal relationship with their Gods, usually developed over a very long time.
| From The Pagan Federation, Scotland.
Anyway, this is, I think, an interesting meaning of a very common English word.

Shirley | You will be pleased to know that the BMS website has re-established contact with the WWW and one of its resources pertinent to this thread is now browseable again: http://www.britmycolsoc.org.uk/files/ENGLISH_NAMES.pdf

| | | Re: Fungi common name sources When this list was brought out a few years ago, I was telling everybody we must now start using these suggested English names, but now I have serious reservations.
They have not been universally accepted and some are just plain silly and meaningless and in my opinion the whole exercise has been a waste of time and money.
Also, since this list was produced some scientific names have been altered too.
Anyway Goosey, I hope you find this helpful.

Thanks that give me plenty to work with | Have fun but remember what I told you previously (on WATW) about my thoughts on English Names; much in line with what Neil just said above.
